memory: opening ceremony
[ it's the opening ceremony at the academy today — your very first day of kindergarten! you asked your dad as you were getting ready to leave the house if he was going to make you something special to celebrate, and he gave you a chicken-shaped candy on a stick. it's the same thing he's made a million times as he's practiced to hone his candy crafting skills, but you're pretty sure this is the best looking one he's made yet, so it's definitely special. you held onto it for the whole drive there, only finally letting yourself take a nibble of it after you've arrived and shown your best friend how cool it is.
a man with a camera is making rounds as everyone gathers together beforehand to get some family photos. neither you or your best friend have moms, but that's okay. the two of you pull your dads together for the picture and you put your arms around each other and smile big as the camera flashes!
your dads both give the camera man their names and addresses to write down so he can mail them their copies of the photo after it's developed. isaac dover, your friend's dad says. dane gustavia, says yours, and you recite your address along with him as he gives it, proud that you remember the zip code and everything!
when it's time for the ceremony to start, after you've shared your awesome candy chicken with your friend, he takes your hand and pulls you along to go to find some good seats, your dads following somewhere behind you. going to school with a bunch of strangers is kind of scary, but as long as the two of you are together you're sure there will be plenty of good times ahead. ]
