memory: SS-5 - major AAI2 spoilers

[ it's a freezing late-winter night, and you're hiding in a little igloo in the snow-covered front yard of an orphanage, shivering in the too-thin red raincoat you have on over your pajamas as you continue to watch what's happening outside.

you've just watched a man die — the big man from zheng fa who they say is the president, with a stuffed animal and a bouquet of yellow lilies in his arms that were meant for the mother of his new son. he was cut down by the old blind assassin with the big black dog — the man who saved your life six years ago when you were trapped in that freezing car.

with his part of the job done, the assassin leaves the yard and goes back into the entry hall of the orphanage. but ms. roland and that weird man with the goggles who planned all of this apparently aren't done yet, and as they come to collect the president's body to bury under the flowerbeds on the other side of the building, you hear what they have in store for the assassin — how they plan to kill him too to keep all of this quiet. he's blind, after all, so he should be an easy target if they make sure his dog can't alert him to coming danger.

your heart races, and you devise a plan in an instant. it's winter, and you know where they keep the kerosene for the heaters. you can start a fire here to cause a distraction while you help guide the assassin to safety, and to melt away the evidence that either of you were ever here.

so you do. you pour the kerosene all around the front entrance, you strike a match and throw it, and you watch it all go up in flames.

and then you run back in and find the old assassin, taking his hand in yours and leaning in to whisper. ]

They want to kill you to keep you quiet, but I'll help you. I set a fire out front, so I can show you how to get out the back way! Come on!

[ the man seems surprised, but he can sense his dog's acceptance of you. ]

Oh? You recognize this lad, do you, Anubis?

[ this orphanage is where he dropped you off all those years ago, so it's not hard for him to put the pieces together as the three of you hurry together through the hall. ]

You wouldn't happen to be one of those boys from the car, I suppose?

[ you nod, but then remember he can't see that. ]

You saved my life, so I'm gonna do the same for you!

Keh heh heh... I see. To think my one good deed would be repaid like this.

[ he gives your hand a gentle squeeze and follows your lead, and you smile for the first time in months. ]
