memory: IS-7
[ you're (almost) six years old, and it's christmas eve today... but even more importantly, this is the last day of the big dessert contest your dad has been working so hard to win, and the day everyone's going to learn who the best pastry chef in the world is!
you're walking by yourself through the deep snow of the back path to come meet him at his window at the contest venue so you can taste test his entry for the finals for him. he's been counting on you to help him ever since he lost his sense of taste, and there's nothing that makes you prouder than getting to be a part of what he does.
this time, though, you get stopped on the way there. it's your best friend, whose dad was competing against yours in this same contest. at first you're excited to see him, but then you see the look on his face and you see the rope in his hands. ]
W-what's going on?
[ you try to make yourself sound cheerful and normal, like maybe that will somehow change his answer, but your eyes are wide and uncertain.
he bites his lip and sniffles, and he clenches the rope tight in his fist.
you start to take a step back, but he's fast, and before you have any hope of getting away, he's grabbed hold of your sweater and is pushing you down into the snow with a tearful apology. ]
I'm sorry...!!
[ he's always been bigger and stronger than you, and he has no trouble holding you down and tying up your hands and feet, even as tears stream down his face and he keeps apologizing to you over and over. ]
My dad's too scary, I can't disobey him. Please forgive me! I'm sorry!
Stop it, ------!
[ you cry through tears of your own — you say his name, but somehow right now you can't hear it, and you can't remember what it was. ]
I promised my dad! I'm gonna let everyone know my dad's desserts are the best in the world...!
[ but he doesn't stop. he struggles to carry you to his father's car, and then he puts you in the backseat, leaving you tied up and helpless. he gets in too, and locks you both inside. even as the temperature drops lower and lower and you can see your own breath, as you start drifting out of consciousness, certain that you're going to freeze to death here tonight, he stays there next to you, never leaving your side...
but you don't care. he already betrayed you, and it's his fault that you'll never see your dad again. ]
